What are my Bookish friends up to this week?

Published by bookish at 1:42 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Being a lazy Sunday, once again I’m going to peek at some of my Blogroll friends and see what interesting things they’re up to lately.

My very first look, over at Alpha Heroes, had me chuckling. I have no idea what What a Scoundrel Wants is about (though one can guess, don’t you think??), but the title amuses and delights me. I hope she gets the book, and reviews it - I can’t wait to see the review!

Over on Book Zombie, the writer reviews a book whose plot sounded fascinating at the beginning, but that she lost interest in as she went along. I’m sorry to hear that; I hadn’t heard of the book, and thought I might look for it when I first read its description. But what really entertained me at her blog was the entry where she mentions the Typealyzer, which reads your blog and gives you a personality assessment based on what it contains. I just ran Bookishgal through it, and got this result: ISTP - The Mechanics.

The independent and problem-solving type. They are especially attuned to the demands of the moment are masters of responding to challenges that arise spontaneously. They generally prefer to think things out for themselves and often avoid inter-personal conflicts.

The Mechanics enjoy working together with other independent and highly skilled people and often like seek fun and action both in their work and personal life. They enjoy adventure and risk such as in driving race cars or working as policemen and firefighters.

I don’t know about enjoying risk (you’d never catch me in a race car), but much of the rest of that seems fairly accurate, I’d say. So thanks to Book Zombie for that!

Sheri at Bookopolis is talking about KIMBOOKS, called “the world’s largest non-profit bookstore,” in an effort to encourage people to support independent and non-profit bookstores in their holiday book-buying.

Breeni Books has a review of What Would Churchill Do?: Business Advice from the Man Who Saved the World. That’s a very interesting take on Churchill, stepping out of the usual historico-political analysis. I may have to find this book myself and have a read.

And speaking of non-fiction! Melanie at The Indextrious Reader is talking about a reading challenge she found on the Ars Hermeneutica site. Check out her post for the full details, but basically it involves reading three non-fiction books in 2009, books related to “Nature’s Wonders.” Then you write your opinion and send a short note to the Ars Hermeneutica site, and they put it with other notes in their “Book Note” section. Cool, eh?

And one of Melanie’s own selections is probably going to be Mauve: How One Man Invented a Color That Changed the World. From the title alone - I WANT TO READ THIS BOOK.

So, lots and lots of cool and interesting stuff going on in my small book-blogosphere right now. Do have a look at everything.

Now to decide on my choices for the Science Book Challenge…

Your site looks sooo much more professional than mine! I am still pretty clueless about all the cool tools and links, but I’d love you to check out my site on today, allthepage. I’ll definitely be checking back to yours…

I remember James Burke talking about the mauve dye in Connections. It was a byproduct of chemistry research, and the invention of chemical dye led to all sort of other things.

I need to see all the episodes of Connections again. (Which comment is in itself a “connection”, from your blog post to my memories….)

I would love to do our own “Connection” series somehow. :-)

Bookishinsac, I’ll be heading over to your blog to have a look soon. I did peek yesterday, though I was decorating my tree and kinda got distracted. If I can give you some tips, I’ll try to help out.
